Cycling Metric

What is Work (Kilojoules)?

The total mechanical energy expended during a ride, often a better calorie estimator than heart rate.

Deep Dive

Kilojoules (kJ) measure the actual work performed by driving the pedals. Because the human body is roughly 20-25% efficient, 1 kJ of mechanical work at the pedals burns roughly 1 Calorie (kcal) of food energy. This 1:1 ratio makes kJ a highly accurate way to track calorie burn.

Formula
Work (kJ) = (Avg Power (Watts) x Time (sec)) / 1000

Why It Matters

Essential for nutrition planning. If you do a 2000kJ ride, you know you've burned approximately 2000 Calories and need to replenish accordingly.
